By the time the film went into production, Malek sported fake teeth for Mercury’s signature overbite. When I took them out by the end of the film, I felt quite naked. Bohemian Rhapsody is a celebration of Queen, their music and their extraordinary lead singer Freddie Mercury. Freddie defied stereotypes and shattered convention to become one of the most beloved entertainers on the planet.

The film traces the meteoric rise of the band through their iconic songs and revolutionary sound. They reach unparalleled success, but in an unexpected turn Freddie, surrounded by darker influences, shuns Queen in pursuit of his solo career. Bohemian Rhapsody and Rami Malek cleverly and warmly distill an era and its music into a thoroughly entertaining piece of music history. Bohemian Rhapsody doesn’t throw itself into the tale of the band with anything approaching the abandon of the boldly unconventional 1975 smash hit that gives the movie its name. Bohemian Rhapsody the movie is just a conventional rock flick, one all too ordinary for a man and a band that exemplified the extraordinary. There are some individual moments and elements to like here, but taken as a whole, Bohemian Rhapsody is mostly a flatline with occasional blips of life here and there—and not nearly enough to bring the whole body back from the dead.

Look, I get it, scripted films are not documentaries. And, sometimes, creative license has to be used to move a story forward. But I’ve never seen a film distort its facts in such a punitive way. It’s like the movie wants to punish Freddie Mercury. This movie depicts the greatness that is Freddie Mercury, shows some of his flaws but mostly celebrates what he and Queen brought to the world. And that is something this movie does perfectly. Hats of to Rami Malek for his faboulous impersonation of the greatest entertainer to have ever lived. Sidenote: This is not, I repeat this is not a documentary. To everyone who criticises the movie because of a lack of depth or not a 1 on 1 representation of the facts, I think you went into the theater with the wrong mindset.

Yes this film may have a few historical inaccuracies, but that doesn’t really matter, the film was two hours of fun and I enjoyed ever minute as a huge Queen fan. Rami Malek was the perfect fit to play Freddie Mercury even getting his mannerisms down to a T, the Live Aid scene was done very well. This film is a must watch for any Queen fan, it will get you singing and crying throughout. Neither good or bad the film crafts their greatest hits and Wikipedia facts into one easy to swallow happy meal.
